Why We Roll Out Our Mats at Cherry Hill: The Story Behind Our Studio Space with San Remo Views

When I first envisioned bringing classical Pilates into the fresh air, I knew the location had to be Cherry Hill.

But if you’re new here, let me share the story of how this little hill with San Remo views overlooking the water became our home—and why practicing here is as good for your mind as it is for your powerhouse.

Finding My Favorite Spot in the Park

Long before I founded Central Park Pilates, Cherry Hill was one of my favorite spots in the Park. Located just off the West Side, it is a historic overlook designed in the 19th century as a scenic turnaround for horse-drawn carriages.

Standing on the crest of the hill, you are treated to what I believe is the most iconic, breathtaking view in all of New York City:

  • The gentle, shimmering expanse of the Lake right in front of us.

  • The elegant, sweeping arch of Bow Bridge to our right.

  • The majestic twin towers of the San Remo building rising proudly over the Upper West Side skyline.

During the Pandemic my dog and I took daily walks to this spot. As I stood there each day, watching the sunlight play off the water, I felt my shoulders drop and my breathing instantly deepen. I wanted to share that exact feeling of expansive, peaceful focus with our community.

The Proven Mental Health Benefits of "Blue Space"

While practicing Pilates outdoors feels amazing, the benefits are actually backed by environmental psychology.

Scientists have long studied the restorative effects of "Green Spaces" (parks and forests), but exciting new research focuses on "Blue Spaces"—environments that feature natural bodies of water like our view of the Lake.

The "Blue Mind" Effect: Studies show that being near, on, or looking at water reduces cortisol (stress hormones), lowers heart rates, and helps quiet busy, anxious minds.

When we coordinate our classical breathwork during The Hundred or flow through the spinal articulation of The Roll Up, we aren't just working our physical core. By pairing our movement with views of the gently rippling lake, we are actively calming our nervous systems and multiplying the mental health benefits of our workout.

An Invitation to Flow with San Remo Views

Our 50-minute classical mat classes are designed for all levels, and we keep things simple: we provide a welcoming, women-owned space where you can connect with your body and New York's natural beauty all at once.

There is nothing quite like looking up during a Teaser or a Swan Dive and seeing the San Remo towers framing the blue sky. It turns a workout into an experience that grounds you, restores you, and connects you to this incredible city.
