What is the Contrology movement series in Pilates?

Contrology is the original name given to the Pilates method by its creator, Joseph Pilates. It refers to a specific, continuous series of mat exercises engineered to develop the body uniformly, correct posture, and restore physical vitality.

  • The Core Principle: Contrology focuses on total mind-body control, using the "powerhouse" (abdomen, lower back, and hips) to initiate all movements.

  • Sequential Flow: The classic series follows a purposeful order—starting with breathwork like The Hundred and progressing through spinal articulation, rolling, and leg control.

  • Full-Body Precision: Rather than isolating individual muscles, every movement engages the whole body to build functional strength and balance.
